Spanish Dance

Sophia Mintz is a dancer, teaching artist, and choreographer specializing in flamenco and Spanish dance. Sophia began her dance training with Toni Carrion in Claremont, CA, studying the Royal Academy of Dance ballet syllabus. When her family lived in South Asia for part of her childhood she had the opportunity to study kathak (classical North Indian dance), which she continued for several years as a teenager in Los Angeles. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a concentration in dance, where she studied under Viola Farber, Lance Westergaard, Emily Devine, Karen Levy, and Dan Hurlin. Sophia has performed as a modern dancer in works by Matthew Westerby, Pam Tanowitz, Christopher Williams, Kara Cross, and Eliza Miller. Her own choreography has been performed at the Mark Morris Dance Center, Danspace Project, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, HERE, and Sarah Lawrence College.

Sophia began her training in flamenco and Spanish dance in Granada, Spain, with La Mariquilla, La Presy, and Ana Calí, and continued in NYC with Andrea del Conte, Dionisia Garcia, Viola Marks-Kelly, Jose Molina, and Juana Calá, among others. She is currently part of Flamenco Vivo’s Cuadro professional development program for flamenco artists. Since 2005, Sophia has performed at venues including restaurants, private parties, art openings, schools, and theaters. In 2008, Sophia was introduced to the Spanish Dance Curriculum, a unique and comprehensive syllabus combining flamenco, escuela bolera, and Spanish regional dance, which she has integrated into her dance teaching. Since 2013, Sophia has taught flamenco and Spanish dance in various settings including school and community programs, the adult program at the Mark Morris Dance Center, as a guest teacher for the Dance for PD program, and privately. She currently teaches for Flamenco Vivo's "Project Olé" dance residencies in public schools around NYC, for Ballet Hispanico’s children and teen programs, and privately.
